Digest authentication and Advanced Digest authentication are authentication methods that send user credentials over the network as an MD5 hash, where the original user name and password cannot be deciphered from the hash. The MD5 hash, also known as an MD5 message-digest, transmits a hash of the user's credentials in a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) header in an HTTP 1.1-compliant browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 and later.
For more information about authentication methods in IIS 6.0, see the "Authentication" topic in the "Security" section of the Server Administration Guide of the IIS 6.0 documentation.
