A user who has the "View, insert, edit, delete listings" permission to a SharePoint Portal Server 2003 portal area cannot edit or delete a listing

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003, when you assign a user the "View, insert, edit, delete listings" permission to an area in the portal site, the user can add a listing to that portal area, but the user cannot edit or delete the listing that the user added. When the user tries to edit or delete the listing, the user receives one of the following messages, depending on the situation:

Error Message 1

You do not have the appropriate rights to editing listing TitleOfListing.

Error Message 2

You do not have the appropriate rights to delete listing TitleOfListing.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because only users who have the "Manage Area - Delete or edit the properties for an area on the portal site" permission to a portal area can edit or delete a listing in a portal area. If a user does not have the "Manage Area - Delete or edit the properties for an area on the portal site" permission, the user can add and view a listing in a portal area, but the user cannot edit or delete the listing. By default, members of the Web Designer site group and members of the Content Manager site group have the "Manage Area - Delete or edit the properties for an area on the portal site" permission.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, add the users who you want to permit to edit and delete listings in the portal area to either the Web Designer site group or to the Content Manager site group. Alternatively, assign the "Manage Area - Delete or edit the properties for an area on the portal site" permission to the user.
